Decimals

Not every number is a whole number and by using decimals we can write numbers of all different sizes. Decimal numbers are a part of whole numbers which can be positive or negative and are written like "2.6" or "-6.78".
It is important to know place value when working with decimals.  Place value  gives a value to each number depending on where it is in the number.

Ordering Decimals

To order decimals, we have to compare the numbers starting by looking at the numbers in the left place value column.

Example 1:

To work this out, we would look at the first number to the left. They are both 3 and therefore equal so we cannot tell which number is bigger. We will then look at the next number along: the first number has a 6 in the tenths column and the second has a 1 in the tenths column. We know that 6 is bigger than 1 and therefore 3.6 must be bigger than 3.16.
